 Questions & Answers

1.  Who are you?

I’m Beth Fehlbaum. My last name is pronounced Fell-böm. Think of it like “Fell-on-a-bomb”–without the “on-a,” or the “b” at the end of “bomb.” My husband’s family is from Switzerland, and it’s a Swiss-German name.
I have an M.Ed. in Reading, B.A. in English/minor in Secondary Education. I’m entering my 20th year of teaching, and teaching freshmen is my dream job. (No, I’m not joking.)

Actually, I have 2 dream jobs:
(1) I teach freshmen, and (2) I’m  a professional writer. I’ve written 4 Young Adult realistic fiction novels, and I recently completed co-writing a creative non-fiction book about trauma recovery.

My fiction books are: The Patience Trilogy (Courage in Patience, Hope in Patience,  and Truth in Patience) and Big Fat Disaster.  The American Library Association named Hope in Patience a 2011 Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers, and the Texas Library Association named Big Fat Disaster to The 2015-2016 Spirit of Texas Reading List-High School. It also received a starred Kirkus Review.

The trauma recovery book is currently being shopped to publishers.

So . . . I love writing, and I love reading, and I’m passionate about sharing my love of great, engaging, heart-pounding literature, with my students!

2.  Are you married?

Top Left: When we were in high school! OMG we were so young!

Yep. I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart for 32 years, although we’ve been together for 37. We met when we were 14 & 15. (Quick! Do the math! LOL.)

3. Do you have kids?

Yes: I have three grown daughters and a daughter-in-law. I also have “furry children”: my dogs: Chase, Kevin, and Jake.  I also feed whatever comes up on my porch and eats the cat food at night. My daughter claims that the squirrels and birds in my front yard are obese because I feed them too much. I, however, consider them short for their height.

4. Do you have any hobbies?

My 2 jobs–teacher & author–keep me super-busy, but I LOVE working in my gardens. I also collect folk art, “funky junk”, wooden angels, and the word “Hope.” I’m a real homebody.  My house isn’t that big, but I’ve been told that it’s decorated like a Cracker Barrel. Now, if only I could make gravy like they do at Cracker Barrel…

5. What kind of music do you like?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE The Avett Brothers, and I loved Mumford and Sons before they changed their style…I like alternative folk music. A LOT.  I listen to A LOT of podcasts–I have a love of ‘story.’

6. Favorite movie, TV shows, etc?

I believe I have watched the movie, Moana, approximately a hundred times. That’s an exaggeration. But I love the music. My ring tone is even from the movie!  I was a huge Breaking Bad fan, and I like Better Call Saul. I am fairly addicted to Dateline, 20/20, 48 Hours, On the Case With Paula Zahn, and Snapped. I don’t know what it says about me that I can love Moana and Snapped at the same time. . .

7. Favorite saying?

“Hope is the opposite of fear.”
